The Garner Citizen blog has taken up residence at garnercitizen.com/blog. Come visit us there.
We’ll still be using our Tumblr site for sharing our tweets and video, reblogging other Tumblog content (hello, Sociabelle), posting our Question of the Week, and allowing readers to submit their pictures. We just won’t be posting as often.
As always, if you have any feedback, shoot an email to rachel [at] garnercitizen.com.

Spelling bee at Crabtree Valley Mall this Saturday

Local students will have the chance this Saturday to show off their spelling skills and possibly secure a spot in the Macy’s Spelling Bee Finals in New York City.

Macy’s is holding its fifth annual Spelling Bee competition in 29 store locations across the country, including Crabtree Valley Mall (4325 Glenwood Ave in Raleigh) on Saturday, Aug. 28. Each winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to New York to participate in the Final Spelling Bee at Macy’s Herald Square. They’ll also win a year of online learning from Kaplan Tutoring and a $150 gift card from Scholastic.

The Macy’s Spelling Bee is open to the first 50 children, ages 8 to 10, who register onsite the day of the event. Registration will begin at noon, and the competition will begin promptly at 2:00 p.m.

The finals will be held in New York Sunday, Sept. 26 at Macy’s Herald Square at 2 p.m. The winner of the final competition will receive a $5,000 Kaplan Tutoring scholarship, a $500 gift card from Scholastic and an all-inclusive trip for a family of four to the Franklyn D. Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica, courtesy of The Jamaica Tourist Board.

Friday Family Flicks, camping, White Deer Dash, and more. Much more.

It’s a busy weekend in Garner that includes an outdoor movie, camping, a road race, and a free concert — all at Lake Benson Park.

On Friday night, pull up a blanket or chair to the grassy slope in front of the main stage and enjoy the family-friendly flick Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.” The movie begins at 8:30 p.m. and is free. Refreshments will be for sale.

Those who’ve signed up for camping that night will stay and sleep under the stars. As of Friday evening, almost all of the maximum 40 permits have been issued.

While it’s not the first time the town has organized a camping outing at Lake Benson, it is the largest group, said Stephanie Shaffer, supervisor of White Deer and Lake Benson parks. She said they will likely plan for a smaller group in the fall again.

If any campers are registered for the White Deer Dash 5K, they certainly have the advantage of location. The third annual road race begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Lake Benson Park (fun run at 8 a.m.).

Last-minute registration will be held Friday evening from 6-9 p.m. at Lake Benson’s Shelter #1, as well as the morning of the race. About 130 runners have pre-registered.

Wrapping up the town-sponsored events this weekend is the performance of Bull City Syndicate at Lake Benson Park as part of the Garner Parks & Rec Summer Concert Series. The show is free, with music starting at 7 p.m.

A couple of other events we know about: On Saturday, Sovereign King Church will host its first Welcome to the Neighborhood Hot Dog Cookout and Shindig with a free cookout, stuffed animals, EMS rescue trucks and much more.

We had a great time Thursday night at Rush Hour Karting for our first-ever Citizen Social!

Garner Citizen staff and readers, Paw Prints Animal Rescue volunteers, and Tweet Divas (in all, a group of about 100) tested their racing skills on the go-kart track and enjoyed food by Unforgettable Trackside Tavern.

At the end of the evening, we raffled off a variety of prizes: two concert tickets to the Raleigh Amphitheater; a haircut and style from Salon on Main; a one-year subscription to The Garner Citizen; gift cards from Aversboro Coffee, Characters Quarters, Harris Teeter and Lowe’s Food; guest passes to Rex Wellness; movie tickets to White Oak cinema; bowling passes to Buffaloe Lanes, Town of Garner T-shirts; and freebies from McDonald’s.

We’d like to thank RushHour for hosting the event, Unforgettable Trackside Tavern for providing the great food, the various businesses that donated door prizes, and our guests — we hope you had a blast, like we did!
