Help the Boy Scouts, show off your spelling skills this weekend

Here are some weekend events in or around Garner…

Boy Scout barbecue fundraiser on Friday: Troop 391 will host a barbecue fundraiser at Garner United Methodist Church (201 Methodist Drive) from 4 to 8 p.m. A barbecue plate dinner is $8, and includes pork barbecue with baked beans, slaw, hushpuppies and sweet tea. Pork barbecue by the pound is $8; Southern Brunswick Stew is $8 for one quart.

Spelling bee competition on Saturday at Crabtree Valley Mall (4325 Glenwood Ave in Raleigh): Macy’s is holding its fifth annual Spelling Bee competition in 29 store locations across the country, including Crabtree Valley. Registration will begin at noon, and the competition will begin promptly at 2:00 p.m.

Free concert at Lake Benson, Pretty in Pink Foundation Poker Run this weekend

Free music this weekend: On Saturday, the town of Garner will present its first show in the Garner Summer Concert Series with jazz musician and former Capital Jazz Fest Challenge winner Marcus Anderson. The concert is held at Lake Benson Park (921 Buffaloe Road), with seating near the large picnic shelter. The local talent pre-show starts at 6 p.m. and the featured artist will go on at 7 p.m. Bring a blanket and/or lawn chairs and food for a picnic—or purchase food from the concessions.

Like to ride? Also on Saturday, Locked and Loaded (1125 Hwy 70 W) will host the first Pretty in Pink Foundation Poker Run. Pretty in Pink is a N.C.-based non-profit that assists women with breast cancer.

Registration for the poker run is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with kickstands up at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $15 per motorcycle; $25 with a passenger. The cost of registration includes a dinner plate and event shirt. All proceeds will be used to help women in Wake and Johnston counties.
